Happy Fathers Day! In the spirit of our "Award-Winning" Mother's Day blog post, we decided to come back and do one for the boys. And by boys, we mean Dads! There have been many memorable fathers in film history, from Darth Vader to Mufasa and everything in between... but here at Wrapal, we do things a little differently. So here's a list of dads that you definitely forgot about, you heartless monsters. All dads deserve love (but some more than others).
Ulysses Everett McGill - O Brother Where Art Thou
Although he may be a slick Dapper Dan man who knows his way around a sentence, he's not smooth talking his way up our last. Busted for practicing law without a license, he spends the whole film trying to get back to his wife before she re-marries, only to find out that the best thing that happened to his family was him faking his own death and leaving the picture. Although he eventually wins back the favor of his betrothed...we all know how scummy he really is.
Dad Rating: 5/10 “I am the only daddy you got! I'm the damn paterfamilias!”
Yondu Udonta – Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2
Yondu isn’t exactly the ideal father archetype, especially when the closest thing to showing affection is telling his son he spared him from being eaten by his crew. But not everything is as it appears. Though rough and crude, Yondu proves that biological relation may make someone a father, but only a true daddy will teach his kid to use his heart and will ***SPOILERS*** sacrifice himself to the freezing, dark vacuum of space for his boy.
Dad Rating: 6/10 "He may have been your father, boy... but he wasn't your daddy."
Brian Mills - Taken
“If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you,I will find you. And I will kill you.” It may not be the most heartfelt of performances, but any father with the willingness to track down his daughter’s captors and follows up on his promise to get her back is a good dad in my book.
Dad Rating: 7/10 “I will tear down the Eiffel Tower if I have to.”
Dr. Ian Malcolm - The Lost World
Although his hairy-chested, water dripping, chaotic performance from Jurassic Park (1993) is what he is known for, Malcolm returns to Isla Sorna in The Lost World (1997) unknowingly with daughter-in-tow and proves that not only is he always right, but he is also a great and responsible father. (Well, as responsible as you can be on an island full of dinosaurs.)
Dad Rating: 8/10 “Hey, you want some good parental advice? Don't listen to me.”
President Thomas J Whitmore - Independence Day
Not many dads can say they saved the world. Bill Pulman’s role as the President of the United States speaks for itself as both a great husband till death do us part, and a great father to not only his daughter, but also humanity.
Dad Rating: 9/10 “Yeah, Mommy is sleeping now.”
Chris Gardner - Pursuit of Happyness
I mean, come on. If you didn’t cry during this movie I am worried for you. Mr. Smith’s performance as a down-on-his-luck salesman and super dad Chris Gardner sacrifices everything for his son to give him a better life and prove to the world that he can be a protector and role-model despite the odds stacked against him.
Dad Rating: 10/10 “Hey. Don't ever let somebody tell you... You can't do something. Not even me, alright?”
Denethor - The Lord of The Rings: Return of The King - Dad Rating: 0/10
Old Biff Tannen - Back to the Future 2 - Dad Rating: 1/10
Stannis Baratheon - Game of Thrones - Dad Rating: 1/10
Ego - Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - Dad Rating: 1.5/10
George Bluth - Arrested Development - Dad Rating: 2/10
Bill Meechum - The Great Santini - Dad Rating: 6/10
Jack Ryan - Hunt for the Red October - Dad Rating: 6.5/10
H.I. McDunnough - Raising Arizona - Dad Rating: 6.5/10
Dad - Boyhood - Dad Rating: 7/10
Gaylen Urso - Rogue One - Dad Rating: 8/10
But only after you're done your homework! 👍 👴 🏈
