Compiling a list of the Best Moms in TV and Film was easy enough, and while being positive and uplifting is great and all, we at Wrapal decided to follow it up with this fun, albeit mildly depressing list of the best WORST moms in Film. This list, like all others we share, should serve as the definitive go-to source, and any other alternate takes or opinions are, of course, objectively wrong. The Wrapal team is a veritable brain trust, and we’ve got any and all hot takes covered.
The Alien Queen - Aliens (Helicopter Parent)The Alien Queen is one of those moms that will fight you in the parking lot after a PTA meeting because you insinuated her child’s science project was less than stellar. She feels that her children’s success and failure deeply affects her and is reflective of her own abilities, and when people get in the way of that, she has to fight their battles for them. Their battles are her battles, whether it’s getting picked for the lead role in the school musical, or going toe-to-claw with an exo-suit. She’s not dumb, though, she knows to acknowledge a stalemate when both sides have something to lose, like if her massive clutch of parasitic eggs is threatened by a squishy human with a big gun. Human or not, we had it give it up for the mama with generally the nastiest demeanor around!
Margaret White (Carrie's Mom) - Carrie - (Authoritative Parent)Carrie’s mom is one of those moms that rules with an iron fist; it’s either her way or the highway. Or is it the hell-way? Well actually, it's more like it's the Lord’s way or imprisonment in a cupboard under the stairs. It’s always awkward having the "becoming a woman" talk with your mom, but it’s even worse when every time it's that time of the month, you’re locked in the very same cupboard and forced to pray until you’re “pure” again. Furthermore, what kind of mom forbids her child to go to prom on the grounds that they’re all going to laugh at them? I mean, she was right, let's give her some credit... and things would’ve been totally fine were it not for that errant bucket of pig’s blood. Ya know, the usual...
Pamela Voorhees - Friday the 13th (Snowplow Parent)A Snowplow Parent is one that goes out of their way to remove obstacles from their child’s life in order to ensure their success. Pamela Voorhees, mother of famed machete-enthusiast Jason Voorhees, takes that concept to the extreme by keeping her son out of school and society in general so he won't get made fun of for his deformities. Eventually, she lets him attend Camp Crystal Lake, where her worst fears came to fruition as the other kids push him into the lake and leave him to drown. Pamela, furious that the camp counselors were busy doing the nasty instead of watching her son, promptly resolved the situation by murdering everyone. As if that wasn’t extra enough, when it finally reopened, she went and murdered almost everyone again. That just goes to show that if you don’t let your kids learn by dealing with their own issues, you’ll eventually be forced to stab Kevin Bacon through the throat with an arrow.
Lorraine McFly - Back To The Future (Neglectful Parent)Let's be clear, we're talking about the original timeline Lorraine here. While she’s not entirely a bad mom, she needs a lot of temporal, space-time-continuum-risking hand-holding to get her act together. In the beginning of the first film, she’s a weak-willed drunk and gets almost no support from her husband George against the tyrannical whims of childhood bully Biff Tannen. With no real sense of authority over her children, they’re also a wreck; her daughter is a spinster, her non-Michael J. Fox son is a bum, and her son that is Michael J. Fox is Michael J. Fox, which is actually pretty cool. He is kind of a troublemaker though, and as we all know, no McFly has every amounted to anything in the history of Hill Valley. All in all, it’s important to remember that just because you fell in love with the first schmuck to fall out of a tree and get hit by your dad’s car doesn’t mean you have to pass on your worst traits to your kids.
The Other Mother - Coraline (Tiger Parent)There was some debate in the office as to whether or not Coraline’s Other Mother (otherwise known as the Beldam) technically counts as a mother, but, hey, we're the ones writing the blog post, so we say yes. The Other Mother is one of those Tiger Moms that forces their kids to behave the way they want them to, without a care for how the child feels. Taking advantage of Coraline’s somewhat neglectful real parents, the Other Mother wants Coraline to leave her home in the normal world behind and instead live in her amazingly perfect alternate dimension version. Of course, what at first glance seems perfect rarely actually is. Luckily, Coraline realizes that when someone forces you to sew buttons over your eyes and steal your soul, that's a bad thing. Some parents just need to let their children live their own lives!
And that's it! The final, definitive list of the worst moms in TV and Film, even though all of these moms are from film.Sue us.*
